Individual and Couples Psychotherapy

Frank Dolan provides psychotherapy services to individuals and couples, both in person and remotely. His approach is tailored to each client's unique needs and goals. He specializes in helping clients to navigate difficult life transitions, manage anxiety and depression, and improve their relationships with the world, with others, with themselves and with their bodies.

Existential Psychotherapy

Frank specialises in existential psychotherapy, which focuses on helping clients find meaning and purpose in their lives. This approach is especially helpful for clients who are struggling with existential questions or seeking to make major life changes.

My Approach

For me, existential psychotherapy represents an ongoing quest to negotiate a way of be in The World with others. For the most part we cannot control the world or the thoughts and actions of other people. We do have some capacity to control ourselves and to choose our responses to the world we encounter. We are not passive or helpless even if we often feel that way. Living life is a constant evolution of making choices and then taking ownership of the consequences of our choice. Much of the time there is no single "best" choice but a range of alternatives which are likely to prove "good enough". Some choices will sit well with us as individuals whilst others will feel constrained or inauthentic.

In existential psychotherapy the client and therapist work together to interrogate the client's choices, options and the circumstances which constrain them. The therapy is not tightly-bound to any pre-existing theory or techniques. Rather it seeks to create a new and personal philosophy of the client's existence. The relationship between the client and therapist is based on mutual respect and an assumption of equal agency and power.
